Most of the historic centre is pedestrianised and distances within it are very short. Cathedral, rue des Consuls, place des Oies, Renaissance townhouses: it all links up without ever touching the car.
On Saturday morning the market fills the place de la Liberte and the surrounding streets. Foie gras, goat cheeses, walnuts, ceps and truffles in season: you can drop your shopping home in minutes.
Perigord cooking is best discovered in the evening, in the centre. From the rental there is no journey to plan and no deadline to get back.
An afternoon break, dropping a bag between visits, heading back out for the evening stroll: this is the most concrete advantage of sleeping in the old town rather than on the outskirts.
